Jitsi screen sharing12/5/2023 I guess this might give the appearance of the screen share being more interactive, and is probably a good optimization for things like slide shows where you might want to move the mouse to highlight content. So I wonder if Zoom has an optimization to track the mouse position and update its position continuously even if the background behind it is not being updated. This was fine for what we were doing and definitely better than it just being too blurry to read always.īut the interesting twist was that the mouse moved smoothly and continuously. The screen sharing was sharp, but not smooth, in the sense of as they navigated the editor we’d see a whole update all at once, rather than the intermediate frames. I was on a video call recently with a student who was sharing their screen. I also have a hunch that this is how Zoom works, but with an interesting twist. (I don’t know if it will distribute messages sent to data channels to all connected clients or not.) This seems like something that Jitsi could support but it would probably require a fair amount of hacking in both the client-side library and possibly on the video bridge. I read somewhere that another WebRTC solution addressed this by not using the video channel-since apparently it was too hard to adjust the video encoding parameters properly-and instead periodically sending snapshots of the screen down a data channel. I’m not sure if anyone from Jitsi core is following this thread. Thanks in advance! Jitsi’s an incredible tool. We really don’t want that low-quality stream.Īny other suggestions? Does that choice of encoder matter here? Or are there other settings that we could tweak to better support our use case? I wonder if it can go lower? Again, even one readable frame ever few seconds would allow us to help. Setting the screensharing frame rate lower. So far it seems worth trying some of the following: I’d rather have a very (very) slow frame rate, but have the delivered frames be readable. Specifically, there’s really no utility is delivering a frame that is too blurry to read for the sake of preserving motion. This application has somewhat different requirements that typical video sharing. I’m going to start fiddling with the video streaming settings here and I’m wondering if anyone with more experience in this area has any advice. But frequently the quality of the screencast isn’t good enough to actually read code visible in an IDE or browser tab. Usually students are sharing their screen with us and staff are just using audio, allowing them to examine student code and provide suggestions. Access is controlled by JWT tokens.Įverything works pretty well-except that the desktop screen sharing quality isn’t always great. Having a remote control function using Jitsi Meet is great for privacy and security since Jitsi Meet is open source, Jitsi Meet Electron is open source, Jitsi Meet Electron runs on Linux which many use for privacy and security and it is easy to setup and connect compared to other VNC apps which can be hard for 'grandma' to connect to. Students stay in a room while staff circulate. Looking forward to some help.I’ve created a Jitsi integration that is helping us hold virtual office hours for my CS class. It will be really cool if we could use Jitsi. Our presenters are also teachers and are not very computer savvy either. With Jitsi I could not get them to hear the video unless I add it to YouTube and stream but in that case it gets whole lot more complicated than Zoom for them as we cannot hear each other while YouTube video is playing, etc etc. With Zoom they can hear the video as well as us. During the meeting we do share our screen and play some videos here and there. Am I right It seems to me that screen sharing is always performed with the same hard-coded parameters. My Jitsi video settings are: - resolution: 160x100 - fps: 5 - 100 kBs These settings dont seem to affect screen sharing. I tried Jitsi and it is perfect barring one major problem. Hi, Im using Jitsi 1.1 nightly build 3986. We meet with them online using Zoom but Zoom is proving to be too complex for them. Our customers are teachers with limited online skills. I have a startup and I was looking for a platform that does not require software install at the customer site. Is there a way to share computer sound when sharing screens? I tested it with Chrome on Windows 10. Alternatively, you can downgrade to an earlier version of Chrome, if you’d rather use Chrome. In the meantime, you can try using Firefox instead if Chrome is still giving you issues. The issue has been reported to the google team. I am new to Jitsi and I am sorry if this is not a supported feature. There’s a bug in the latest version of Chrome that’s affecting Screensharing.
